A History of the Air Max
In 1987, designer Tinker Hatfield struck inspiration when he saw the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The design of the French art exhibition building is bold, giving viewers a sense of the architecture’s inner workings. Hatfield decided to give this same design treatment to a pair of shoes, and thus an icon was born.
Hatfield’s shoe design included a ‘window to the sole’, making the Nike’s Air Technology visible to the public for the first time. Early reactions to Hatfield’s design were sceptical, with some saying he’d pushed too far, but the Air Max was a success the moment it hit the shelves. As the years rolled by, the Air Max range expanded. You can now find numerous iterations of the Air Max.

FAQs
When did the Air Max first come out?
The first design came out in 1987, but the technology behind it was developed nearly a decade earlier in ’78 with the Nike Air Tailwind. Since debuting the Air Max in ’87, Nike has been tinkering with the design and releasing new styles nearly every year! They actually now have a Nike Air Max Day to celebrate this iconic shoe and release new styles, so keep an eye out on March 26 for new designs.
Does the Air Max make you taller?
Yes, by at least 3cm! The different styles add slightly different heights, the shortest are the 90’s at 3cm exactly, while the tallest are the 720s at around 3.8cm.
Does Nike Air Max 90 run true to size?
The 90 does run true to size, so if you’re ordering a pair, make sure to get your usual size. They are a tad on the narrow side though, so if you have wide feet you may want to consider going a half size up.
